Name: Kurogane | Real name: Youou
Canon: Tsubasa Chronicle (manga)
Canon Point: Tsubasa World Chronicle: Chapter 17 - Using All Your Strength | After Syaoran has entered the utaki.
Age: 25-26
Type of Character: OU
Reference: Such a tragic childhood
Setting Concepts:
Nihon/Japan/Suwa/Shirasagi Castle: The place where Kurogane was born and grew up is different from the feudal Japan as we know it. Typically is it referred to as Nihon but can also be called Japan. There are monsters who run wild and the time period is definitely one where technology does not exist but special abilities do. Suwa was the name of the province where he grew up with his parents but after their deaths he was taken to live in Shirasagi Castle and pledged his life and sword to Tomoyo-hime.
Tomoyo-hime: The princess who saved Kurogane as a teenager and the one who he has sworn his loyalty to. She was the one responsible for sending him on his journey across various worlds. He has met another version of Tomoyo in another world, thinking it was her at first but realizing it wasn't.
Dreamseer: An individual who can not only see potential future events in their dreams but who can communicate with people in other worlds through dreams. The Tomoyo of his world is a dreamseer as is Sakura and many others Kurogane has met.Basically everyone and their mothers.
Youma/Demons: Vicious creatures that makes his version of Japan different from the one most people would consider to be normal. They come in a variety of sizes, appearance and strength.
Ginryū: A powerful sword that once belonged to his father and was supposed to be buried with his mother after her death. He had a replica made but handed it over as a price to return to his world. Since then Kurogane has taken the original with him on his travels.
World-hopping: This is something Kurogane can and does do on a frequent basis, traveling from one world to another - all of them different with a few similarities or even familiar faces. Even if the people look the same and have similar traits, they tend to have different memories. A list of worlds he's visited are: Japan (modern era), Hanshin Republic, Koryo Country, Fog Country, Jade Country, Outo Country (virtual reality inside of Edonis), Edonis Country, Idol Country, Shara Country, Shura Country (the distant past of Shara), Piffle World, Lecourt, Tokyo (past of Clow Country), an unnamed world that they left immediately, Infinity, Celes Country, Nihone Country, Clow Country, Kinugawa Onsen, Nirai Kanai.
Mokona Modoki: A set of magical, rabbit-looking creatures. The white version is the one that travels with Kurogane and grants him and his companions the ability to move between various worlds. It can talk and doesn't appear to have a gender but does enjoy pissing Kurogane off by teasing him, eating his food or burrowing inside of his clothes. Kurogane accepts that the thing is useful from time-to-time but often calls Mokona a variety of names such as Manjuu (meat-bun in Japanese).
Fei Wang Reed: The man who murdered his mother and essentially ensured the death of his father. Also the man responsible for a lot of the horrible stuff that went on after he met up with the group. Kurogane is the one who dealt the final strike that ended the man's life.
Sakura/Syaoran: There are actually two sets of indivdiduals who carry the same name and look nearly identical. One Sakura and Syaoran are actually a set of clones based on the original versions that Fei Wang created in order to fulfill his wish. The clones are the ones who started the journey with Kurogane and Fai, with the clone Syaoran leaving them at the halfway point after attacking them. The original Syaoran joined them from then on and shortly after the clone of Sakura left them too. They saved the original Sakura back in her home world. Now the group travels to find the clones who are also the original Syaoran's parents. Yeaaaaah, it's weird and complicated and doesn't actually make a whole lot of sense.
Fai D. Flourite/Yuui: A magician who tends to get on Kurogane's nerves with his fake smiles, forced cheer and irritating need to insert himself into Kurogane's personal space. Fai is the name he'd taken on after the death of his twin - Fai being the other twin's name and Yuui being his real name. Fai also has this habit of giving Kurogane a series of nicknames: Kuro-puppy, Kuro-pu, Big Dog - basically things that will annoy him.
Celes Country: The world Fai is from and where Kurogane learned about the mage's past. It's also the place where he chopped off his left arm. The entire world was destroyed as they were leaving, destroyed by Fai's own magic but no one lived there anymore so... it's okay.
Kingdom of Clow: The world Syaoran and Sakura came from, also the place where Fei Wang attempted to finalize his wish within the Clow Ruins.
Dimensional Witch Yuuko: The woman Kurogane was sent to after being banished from his own world. She lived in modern-day Japan, running a shop that grants wishes and gave him and the others the means to travel to other worlds via Mokona for a price. Throughout most of their journey, she is the one they dealt with when it came to having their wishes granted and was constantly a thorn in his side. Then she died and another took her place.
Kimihiro Watanuki: Syaoran's "other self" that he left behind to fill the hole by his disappearance. After Yuuko's death he takes over running her shop and helping the group.
Nirai Kanai: The current world where Kurogane is living in. There are two dimensions of the world - the one where the living are and the one where the dead reside. Both dimensions have the same namebecause apparently CLAMP is too lazy to come up with new names and likes to reuse them over and over. Instead they merely refer to it as the exterior (living) and the interior (dead) Nirai Kinai.
Utaki: A tree inside the "interior" Nirai Kinai. This is the place where Syaoran was taken inside and where Kurogane and Fai are trying to break into.
"E" or "Bait": At one point in the series, Fai becomes a vampire - someone who drinks the blood of others. In order to prevent him from drinking to just anyone, Kurogane became bait. The bait is someone who binds their blood to the vampire who turns a person and makes it so that the person turned can't drink any blood but from the bait. Basically what this means is that Fai can only drink Kurogane's blood. Even if the Fai of his timeline is no longer a vampire, Kurogane is still the bait. If Kurogane dies or leaves, Fai will lose his only blood source and will die.
Personality:
At first appearance the ninja usually looks frightening to most people and Kurogane doesn’t do much to change that. As the stoic fighter of the group, some would call Kurogane cold and distant unless you truly know where to look or have lived with him for a period of time. Often a man of few words, it’s not hard to get a one syllable response from the warrior, although there are times when he feels chatty and speaks in length. Some of the time he won’t even introduce himself and leaves it to the more people-friendly individuals of the group. Kurogane is definitely the least outgoing out of everyone in their group and he never feels the urge to change that. When he does decide to speak up, it's usually with a very straight-forward purpose.
To anyone who does find themselves having a conversation with Kurogane they’ll learn that he’s actually pretty rude. Not to mention that he has a foul mouth and curses quite a bit. Kurogane is a man who’d rather be blunt about something than try to think of a kinder way of saying something; he doesn’t care who he might offend or how abrasive he is. Generally this is balanced by his companions that will either wave off his words or apologize on his behalf and he doesn’t always bother to stop them as if he realizes how he must sound to someone. It certainly doesn't stop him from doing it again, though.
From the very beginning Kurogane began to notice things about his new traveling companions. This is thanks to how perceptive he is. He knew that both Fai and Syaoran had some fighting abilities and eventually realized that Syaoran was blind in one eye. His perception has helped in battle as he uses it to sense what’s around him and predict moves before they even happen. Kurogane could fight or even just move around completely blinded and he’s taught this to Syaoran. Outside of battling this perception allows him to see through people’s masks or notice when something is off about someone. Most of the time this is focused on Fai as the magician has the most to hide from them. In Infinity he knew that the princess was hiding things and that Fai was helping her to do it and he didn’t seem all too surprised when Fai told them about all the things he was lying about from the start.
Ever since the death of his parents Kurogane has been very goal-oriented and allows nothing to stand in his way. He had several goals to start with and gained more along the way. To help him with achieving his goals is his strong will. Until he found his mother’s killer and returns home, Kurogane won’t allow himself to die. And he hates people who don’t seem to give a damn about throwing their own life away, though Kurogane seems to believe that sacrificing a life for another’s who they truly care about would be a good death. Though while he wouldn’t necessarily lay down his own life down (since he’s so damn sure of his fighting abilities) there are other things Kurogane would give up in order to obtain his goals.
When Fai tried to convince Kurogane to let him die just so clone!Syaoran wouldn’t be able to use his stolen magic the ninja took matters into his own hands and forced the magician to live. It didn’t matter what the price would be, or that it was against Fai’s wishes, or even that Kurogane would now be responsible for another’s life – he still did it. While in Infinity he forced Fai to drink his blood even though it was against the other’s wishes which says that Kurogane takes responsibility for his own actions, no matter what the cost. This is why he doesn't get too upset when Fai later traded away his magic for a replacement arm while Kurogane was unconscious.
This man is easily riled, especially when subjugated to the childish acts of his companions. It’s not strange to hear him raise his voice, insult people or even see him try to make his “bite” as bad as his “bark” is. Not that his short-temper helps in any of these situations. All it stems from low-tolerance to shenanigans and underlying anger depending on the situation. Most of the time it’s harmless and can even be ignored but the situation gets serious then so does Kurogane. While his time and feelings towards his traveling companions has deepened, it's also softened his attitude towards them just a little. He may not get riled up when asked to perform some minimal task but when Mokona or Fai are deliberately poking at him, one can expect for him to yell or some kind of punishment.
Ever since his parents' death Kurogane has been battle-hungry. At first Kurogane struck out more like a beast, with no real sense of who was friend or foe until Tomoyo-hime arrived. Then he simply sought out whoever might be a challenge to him and was often sealed up inside of a barrier as punishment for the damage he'd caused. It was actually the reason he got sent away in the first place as he would seek out the supposedly strongest fighters in order to defeat them. He enjoys it so much that most of the time it’s not unusual to see him fighting with a bit of a smirk on his face. This hasn’t changed all that much as he still enjoys a good fight although he has stopped killing people unless he feels they deserve to die for what they’ve done.
Going hand-in-hand with his desire to be the strongest Kurogane is also very protective of those he cares about. He would fight to defend them and sacrifice, without hesitation, what he can in order to stay with them. There are few people he would lay down his life for but Kurogane doesn’t want to lose anyone who’s important to him and he would cross thousands of worlds just to find them. He can also be very loyal to those he cares about or has sworn to protect. Absolutely nothing can shake that loyalty, not even if they did something to have wronged him.
Underneath all of the layers that Kurogane readily shows is a compassion that would surprise anyone who doesn’t look closely enough at him. While he may not be the type to sit and hold someone while saying something sappy, he does care for people in his own way. It’s generally gruff and even sometimes comes out abrasive but he does want what’s best for the ones he cares about. In Acid Tokyo, he confronts Fai about living in the present with the rest of them rather than looking back and while in Infinity he looked after real!Syaoran, not to mention all he does for the other two. Also, it must be noted that Kurogane isn’t exactly going out of his way to touch people but he’s gotten very used to people being inside of his personal bubble. Any affectionate touches from him are brief and may not seem all that affectionate at all.
Ever since Fei Wang Reed's death and the reveal of Syaoran and Sakura's truths he's calmed down a little. He doesn't go off every time a new nickname emerges from Fai's mouth because honestly, it means that Fai isn't mad or upset with him. Kurogane went through that once after saving the mage's life and even though it annoys him to hear those ridiculous nicknames, it's also a kind of comfort. Not to mention that Fai isn't hiding behind a fake cheerful personality all of the time. Even Mokona's very annoying antics don't get to him quite as much before. Sure he doesn't like having the thing wiggle around in his clothes or when Mokona calls him 'daddy' but he's even come to care for the little creature as more than just their way to new worlds. His goal has also changed with the death of the man responsible for his parents' deaths and the clones disappearance. Kurogane no longer cares about getting home and it makes his urgency to hurry up and move on non-existent. Though he does still try to get this manga he's been reading ever since that first world in everyone one he goes to, no matter if he can read the language or not. Tu Shanshu better have his manga. :| Also, alcohol has become his friend. He drank it before on occasion but lately he's been doing it quite a lot, possibly due to the fact that he is in pain from where his mechanical arm meets with his shoulder. Luckily he isn't undergo a personality change while drinking like the others do.
Appearance:
Kurogane is a big man, tall to the point of being utterly ridiculous and built like a tank so his size in general can be a bit intimidating to those around him. There is not an ounce of fat on him, he's extremely fit but not overly muscular. He has short and spiky black hair that tends to stand up on all its own. He has red eyes and typically a grumpy or neutral expression on his face. Usually he can be found wearing mostly black with splashes of red clothing. There are a variety of scars on his body, mainly the one to his right side where he was blasted by magic and then at his left shoulder where the mechanical arm attaches to his body. This is what the arm looks like underneath the synthetic skin should he ever lose it but at the moment it just looks like there's a scar all the way around his shoulder.
Abilities:
Ninja Skills:
Ever since he was little Kurogane has been training to use a sword so his skills at handling one are excellent. His preference is a long sword and current one is named Ginryū, which is a sword his father used to use. To go along with his training he also learned a technique from his father called Hama Ryuuou-jin which has been his trademark move. It's combined with energy and allows him to defeat several enemies in one blow. He also has inhuman-like strength and has been shown to shatter walls, snap metal light poles, and move huge bookshelves still filled with books. Whether he's on the battlefield or not he has this uncanny ability to perceive things about people that they'd prefer to keep hidden. This has helped in battles as he doesn't need to see in order to move or fight, he can just sense what's around him. Or he can simply sense when someone is watching him.
Not to mention how sturdy Kurogane is. No matter how many injuries he seems to get Kurogane can still keep moving until his task is done at least. Not only has he survived serious injuries but was also the one who chopped off his own left arm and then proceeded to pull Fai up towards him with just his right despite the blood loss and intense pain he was suffering at the time.
While typically Kurogane will throw his strength around in order to defeat his enemies, he is also very capable of sneaking around like a ninja. Most of the time people may not hear or see him sneak up on them unless they have some sort of ability to sense him.
Summoning: Despite the fact that the magic Fai used to allow Kurogane to "store" his sword inside his left arm was essentially cut off and left behind, despite the fact that his left arm is now mechanical - Kurogane can once again summon his sword at will. Probably a spell that Fai placed back on him at some point. It's no longer stored inside of Mokona's belly and he can put it back just as easily.
"E" or "Bait":
At some point during his travels, he became the only food source for a vampire-turned Fai known as "E" or "bait". Since he's become bait Kurogane's life has also been lengthened beyond that of an average humans, but it doesn't make him immortal or invulnerable to death.
Mechanical Arm:
His left arm is completely mechanical from the shoulder down, meaning it doesn't get hurt or bleed and is even stronger than his right. It has a synthetic skin covering that won't heal like a regular wound if sliced up, meaning if it gets completely destroyed he would have to get a new one. The arm isn't exactly a good fit for him and he was waiting for a replacement before getting dragged into a fight that would put a strain on it.
Curse:
Also, it must be noted that Kurogane is cursed. This curse has made it so that if he was to take a life needlessly then his own strength would diminish.
Inventory:
- His clothes
- His sword: Ginryū
- Left mechanical arm
Soul Gem: This pendant strung on a black leather cord to hang around his neck.
Writing Samples:
Third Person: Kurogane on the TDM | And then for something cheerful (sort of)
Network:
[The network gets a good look at the giant man wearing mostly black with a grumpy face. Kurogane is huge, taking up the entire screen and not allowing for much to be seen behind him or display any hints to where he might be. That is exactly how he likes it.
As for what he's doing on the network... well, he isn't introducing himself or looking for people he knows - those are things other people do. If there is anyone here who recognizes him, then they'll see this and contact him.]
I'm looking for someone who knows a thing or two about technology. Specifically artifical limbs. [Have a nice good look at his left arm which looks perfectly normal.] Lost my arm a while back and got an artifical one but it isn't quite right. There was a replacement on the way but seeing as how I ended up in a different world I'm not sure when I'll get it.
[Spoken like a man who isn't worried about how someone is going to get it to him from another world.]
It's not urgent. [Yes it is because it's painful but Kurogane has had worse injuries and certainly had worse when it comes to the limb not fitting right.]
Also need a job. Small stuff or something you need done like fixing up your homes or needing things hauled around. Nothing too long-term. [Just something to earn a little bit of money that isn't permanent. Either Kurogane doesn't want to believe he'll be here long or there's something else up his sleeve.]
That's all. [Then he proceeds to hang up.]
